“For God so loved the world

shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Wood for a Cross

“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

[John 3:16]

.

We don’t often stop to wonder where that cross came from, do we? Rough timber, that’s what we think of.  Timber formed into a device of death. But the wood? It was cut from a tree — a tree that grew from a seed, just like every other living thing. God gave it life and allowed it to grow, despite knowing its destiny.

.

“I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”

[Galatians 2:20]

.

“It is the Spirit who gives Life, … the words that I speak to you are Spirit,
and they are Life.”

[John 6:63]

Broken

He was broken for me.

“From noon until three in the afternoon darkness came over all the land. About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Eli, Eli, lema sabachthani?” (which means “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?”)…  And when Jesus had cried out again in a loud voice, he gave up his spirit.”

[Matthew 27:45-46, 50]
