Roses for Remembrance

.

On Sandra Heska King’s blog, her “Scripture Sunday” post today is entitled “Bouquets of Roses”, and quotes Isaiah 61:2-3 where it is announced that God will comfort all who mourn and give them bouquets of roses instead of ashes. Her post brought to mind the roses and petals that were placed in memory of my brother-in-law at the memorial services held in Canada and Taiwan.

There are many symbolic gestures used to remember loved ones during the celebration of their lives — lighting of candles, laying of wreaths and flowers, the display of a meaningful possession. Too often they remind me of Job 14:2 …

“We spring up like wildflowers in the desert and then wilt,
transient as the shadow of a cloud.”

Thankfully, there are also promises of things more permanent …

“But the word of the Lord endures forever.”
[1 Peter 1:25]

“The Lord shall reign forever and ever.”
[Exodus 15:18]

“Splendid and majestic is His work,
And His righteousness endures forever.”

[Psalm 111:3]

“…the Lord’s unfailing love surrounds the man
who trusts in Him.”

[Psalm 32:10]

Such words are of great comfort!

    1. Sandra’s are from The Message; mine are mostly from the New American Standard Version, except the last, which is from the New International Version. (The Job reference is also from The Message.)

  1. Oh Carol. Those photos are stunning. I’m so glad you thought to take them and to share them.

The great grandchildren laid roses on the front table at my mom’s service. We saved the petals that they later sprinkled over the urn when we buried it.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. ~Psalm 46:1 (NIV)

  2. Hosea 11:4 – I drew them with cords of a man, with bands of love, and I was to them as one who lifts up and eases the yoke over their cheeks, and I bent down to them and gently laid food before them.

  3. My deepest condolances, Carol. I am so sorry for your loss.

One of my favourites; I also hear the music.

“GIVE EAR TO MY WORDS, O LORD, CONSIDER MY MEDITATION. HEARKEN UNTO THE VOICE OF MY CRY, MY KING AND MY GOD, FOR UNTO THEE WILL I PRAY. MY VOICE SHALT THOU HEAR IN THE MORNING, O LORD, IN THE MORNING WILL I DIRECT MY PRAYER UNTO THEE, AND WILL LOOK UP. ”

Can’t tell you how many times I’ve fallen asleep praying this.

I'd love to hear from you!
